8. #DeathByZoom – Unsaid goodbyes: Grief and loss through COVID, across oceans and unspoken words

When Tommy landed in Australia to backpack for 12 months, he knew instantly he’d never return to Scotland. The downside to living halfway across the world was leaving his close-knit family behind.

We chat with Tommy about his experiences of two parents dying while he was overseas, complex family dynamics and living with decisions made from afar.

In this episode we cover:

  • Moving overseas and dealing with family issues from afar
  • Getting bad news on the telephone
  • Watching a funeral on Zoom
  • Dealing with a second sick parent
  • Complex family relationships
  • Surreal phone calls from home
  • Dealing with grief before someone passes
  • Siblings having different experiences of the same event
  • Finding peace at last.
